Sports Hall

We are very excited and pleased to have these facilities to be able to develop and enhance the fitness, health and well-being of all members of our school community and to extend the opportunities available across the curriculum for sports related education.

The new Sobell Sports Centre, which is attached to the new school site, opened at the end of October 2014 and pupils are already enjoying using these facilities for their PE lessons.

Information Technology

The school is fully wireless and there are at least ten computer suites in the school, of which at least four are equipped with Apple Macs. All departments will have at least one set of wireless laptops.

It is anticipated that the ratio of computers to pupils in our school will be one between two.

Drama

Performing Arts/ Drama is an exciting new subject in Aberdare Community School. It is a subject where creativity is at the heart of the learning, allowing pupils to explore the world in which they live, in a practical and reflective way. It aims to encourage pupils to use their imagination, develop their self-confidence and thinking skills in a fun and stimulating environment with access to some of the best school theatrical facilities in Wales. This includes a dance studio with mirrors and a sprung floor, a fully equipped drama studio with lighting and sound mixing desks, an extensive selection of theatrical resources and a 250 seat performance space.

Performing Arts contributes to the personal and social development of all pupils, as well as the cultural ethos of the school. Performing Arts helps our younger pupils to develop their confidence in Speaking and Listening skills which are a key element within the English curriculum.

Throughout Year 7 & 8 pupils are taught twice a fortnight, with Year 9 pupils having one lesson a fortnight. There is the option for pupils to take up the subject at GCSE and AS/A Level. Pupils are offered further experience of the Performing Arts industry by going on trips to the theatre and having outside agencies perform within our facilities.

The department also hosts plenty of extra-curricular activities such as a Drama club for KS3 and the annual school production. Recent successes have included Grease (2014) and Oliver! (2015) which have been performed in professional venues within the local community such as The Coliseum.

Technology

Aberdare Community School’s Design and Technology department consists of two food technology rooms, three workshops, a textiles room, a graphics room and dedicated ICT suite.

The three workshops have a range of industrial standard workshop machinery as well as modern manufacturing methods; this combination helps us teach traditional practical skills whilst also embracing the latest technology. One workshop is dedicated to Engineering, including milling machines, metal lathes, band saws and a CNC router machine. It also has a welding facility and a metal casting bay. The two other workshops are dedicated to Resistant Materials and include lathes, a chop saw, mortise and tenon machine, a vacuum forming machine, strip heater and scroll saw.

The department is also equipped with two laser cutters, a sublimation printer and 3D printer. The ICT suite includes state of the art PCs equipped with a range of computer aided design software, in addition to the usual applications. The Graphic Design room also has a touch screen whiteboard allowing for frequent interactive learning opportunities, as well as facilities for high quality printing, scanning and copying of promotional and branded products.

The Textiles room has premium quality sewing and embroidery machines to allow our pupils to produce quality garments and products. The Food rooms are also well equipped with new ovens and equipment; there is also space in the department for pupils to serve and present their creations.

As Albert Einstein said, “creativity is intelligence having fun” and these resources provide endless opportunities for this to happen!
